Where I’m From

I’m from the headwaters of the Rio Grande,
Where ancient waters nourish an arid valley floor.
I’m from waters that give,
And waters that take.......
          life.

I'm from where the sun greets us each day as it crests the Sangre de Cristos,
Then bids us good night as it dips below the San Juans.
I’m from where every direction you scan,
A Fourteener stretches to kiss the sun.

I’m from arroyos, chicos, and bristle cone pine,
Piñon and juniper lost in time.

I’m from everybody works;
everything earned, no free rides, no easy outs.
I’m from generational farmers, ranchers, storekeepers,
          and pride.
I’m from working people, dying people.

I’m from pickup trucks and Justin boots,
High school sweethearts, glory days.
I’m from rodeos and county fairs,
A fleeting, fading lifestyle,
and nobody on the outside cares.

I’m from where people don’t try
They do.......
How they must,
When they must,
    ..............Where they must.
