Where I'm From

I'm from a place you never want to go to,

         especially if you're a girl.

I am from no toilets, I am from honey buckets.

I am from not even a single drop of running water. 

I am from one store, no clothes, just chips and pop

         and sometimes frozen pizza.

I am from "elaii" and "kacaa,"

I'm from Ma and Alii.

I am from cutting fish and setting nets,

From traveling by boat, and plane,

         by cars and trucks,

         by snow-go and four-wheel.

I am from tepiq. 

I am from paasaiq.

I am from moose soup, seal soup, 

         bird soup, caribou soup.

I am from guumlanaq.

I remember me and Amber and Desiree playing out

in diapers in the dirty road.

Even if I never want to go back,

I am glad to be from a native village.
